Opel Omega V8: Driving report - 22/02/2012
The Opel that would have changed everything
It was really him, the Omega V8. Opel's attack on the upper classes was ready for, but what stopped him? AUTO BILD Klassik drove the prototype and will give you the answer here.
I t would be easy to underestimate this duo of sedan and station wagon. Really rarely the classic cars from Opel are not: 815 322 Omega B were built between 1994 and 2003, the last great Opel was a four-door with 3.2-liter V6 in "Silver Star", on 26 June 2003, he left the assembly line. There is omega en masse on our roads, so why crane your neck then? Perhaps because the sound of the engine sends you a showers on the back? A throaty throb, fine, not vulgar, a sound that merges during boring in a metallic hammering. Effortlessly, the strong Opel couple sucked towards the horizon, meanwhile, it happens inside noble: resistant leather, plenty of space and clearance, peace and new-car smell. Only the rectangular rolling the old Michelin Pilot Sport rubber bothers everything else seems to be built carefully. Here, the car is not from the series, but from the test: The most recent run of the "V-Car", model P69-LHD LS1 engine X57XE, dated 13 June 2000. Written on a sheet of the test operation, unsentimental stuffed into the glove compartment. It was four months before everything still looked so good.
February 2000. For half a year, Adam Opel AG has already launched notifications for new top model, the boss, the press department formulated a statement: "With its attractive blend of modern technology, superior performance and high comfort, the new Omega underscored V8 our tradition and expertise in the upper class. Simultaneously he is further evidence of our commitment to offer cutting edge technology at competitive prices. " O-Ton Robert W. Hendry, Opel CEO. In March, the flagship flaunts the Geneva Motor Show in autumn 2000, the Omega V8 will come on the market. Hand-wringing and anticipation everywhere - finally a large Opel V8 engine cars from Rüsselsheim will be back soon Premium. Shortly afterwards, there is silence, icy and final. Opel says from the upper-class offensive without giving reasons. Are bosses blame again in Detroit because they do not treat Opel success? Or overheating of the simple amino V8 on German motorways? No word penetrates to the outside. But the issue premium is only once through.
This promising project starts again two years ago. As an Omega B MV6 marks the top of the model range with three-liter V6 and 211 hp and Senator B for five years past, Mercedes, drive BMW and Audi A with V8 models such as the E430, 540i and A6 4.2 quattro successes. Opel can therefore use an image carrier for brand and series with an upward trend well. Technical director Peter Hanenberger, which is hardly weggelobt a year later to Australia, find the answer to the competition in the past: A Vauxhall with eight-cylinder is modeled after the 1977 set KAD series (Kapitän, Admiral, Diplomat ) lost ground recapture. Omega with a 5.7-liter Corvette light alloy engine! "I received the order to put the project together," says Matthias Schollmaier (56), now head of the Opel Test Center Dudenhofen, then Head of omega-development.
In 1984, the doctorate in mechanical engineering started in the Opel motor development, who later brought the Omega clone Cadillac Catera for running and worked in the United States in the development of new-generation rear-drive Cadillac. "But the most gray hair has given me the Omega V8. Longer I sat on the plane than in the office." Many problems are apparent from the start, others will be added soon. The development time is limited, four GM divisions in four countries on three continents and many, many different motivated employees must cooperate with each other: GM (USA) for engine and transmission, Holden (Australia) for the final drive, Opel (Rüsselsheim) for the Project management and Magna Steyr (Austria) as an external developer. The organ donor Corvette is constructed according to the transaxle design: The engine sits forward, the gearbox on the rear axle. A conventional manual transmission, which would be strong enough for power and torque of the V8, it's not the GM shelf. So is the only four-speed 4L60E automatic type (maximum of 600 Newton meters torque) into question.
The small-block V8 did not fit
Then there is the Omega B, of the heritage of many record bears generations in itself. Matthias Schollmaier: "Some parts of the Omega-front structure actually dated back to the early 60s, there was a V8 not provided." In October 1998, the work begins, but unfortunately undermines the development partners in creating the feasibility study, a measurement error with serious consequences: The engine does not fit into the front of the first V8 prototype. The Technical Development Center in Rüsselsheim smoke the heads. 344 hp and 483 Nm at 4200 rpm makes the small-block V8 in the Corvette, Opel formulated 315 hp and 450 Nm of target data. But the engine does not fit the front and back. Brave defeat the developers one obstacle after another: The bulkhead is being rebuilt. The steering system of record times makes a new oil pan and oil supply needed. The engine receives newly formed manifolds, a specially designed drive for the newly sorted ancillaries, stronger valve springs for higher speeds. Finally, the V8 powered rear-resistant Holden draws the Commodore along with a completely new Propshaft. Even the cooling of the aluminum V8 in the engine compartment close Omega works fine - everything seems good.
Marketing and public relations speak for the first time in early summer 1999, the new Opel flagship model, 310 hp and 450 Nm of maximum torque are in prospect. "The end of 1999 drove the first test car. When we were done with the engine, it ran perfectly," says Matthias Schollmaier. "But because the automatic proved to be too weak: For continuous load of 6,000 rpm downshift did not fly the connection of converter and crankshaft, the so-called flex plate apart at high speeds was also the gearbox was built for America, not for German motorways... adjusting the automatic to European conditions would have taken too long, the start of the Omega V8 would have fallen behind the agreed end of the series. That's it. "
While Opel in February 2000 anreicht detailed information, performance, smoothness, traction, sports suspension and traction control praises, indicating aluminum applications in the doors and center console and a tailpipe in brushed stainless steel, the Omega V8 Transmission fighting on the bench his last fight - unsuccessfully left of the dozen verrauchenden plate clutches down. What if? Had the Omega V8 can change the course of time, he could have made a new beginning in ancient hunting grounds? Probably. And the half-hearted experiment Signum Opel would have to save yourself. At least the V8 would become a classic: the omega of the upper class, the diplomat of the 21st Century. Underestimate you. But certainly appreciated.
